Shot blasting strengthening process makes use of high speed shots flow (fed by shot blasting machine) to impact the metal surface in order to generate plastic circulating strain layer. It resulted in the beneficial change of microscopic structure and obtaining residual stress field. The microscopic structure and residual stress can improve fatigue failure resistance and stress corrosion resistance so as to attain higher reliability and duration
Engine vehicle gear shot blasting and strengthening
Shot blasting and strengthening is a normal application for gears. Gears of any size and design all can improve bending fatigue resistance of dedendum by shot blasting strengthening. The interface of gears generates load, which can form bending stress at the bottom of gears.
The gears will all process shot blasting strengthening after carburizing and quenching or surface hardening. To increase the surface hardness is in same proportion to form pressure stress. It lies on the parameters of carburizing treatment and shot blasting. The maximum residual stress is between 170-230 ksi (1170-1600MPa) after carburizing and strengthening treatment. Commonly we use the shots of high hardness (55-62 HRC) for the carburizing and strengthening. It also can use the shots of less hardness (45-52 HRC) according to the conditions, which will generate the pressure stress of 50% of hard shots.
A pressure stress will be generated by the hammering and honing, which is a best method to form opposite contact fatigue on the gears. To go along the surface finishing for the concaves generated by shot blasting, can disperse the contact load through large surface and reduce the contact stress.
